Fake followers, anyone?

Don’t we usually see successful businesses, celebrities, early risers to Twitter all with thousands of followers? Didn’t for a minute sighed that they must be doing something right which we are not aware of? How many start up businesses and individuals do you know that reached or exceeded the magic number 10,000 in an unbelievably short time?

Well, here’s some news. Some may not even have true followers. Here’s an interesting article about fake Twitter followers discussing the risks and ethics of the practice on thenextweb.com by Lauren Hockenson.

I was just wondering, would you support if a startup business or an individual trying to reach his/her audience bought the followers to build a platform until their business took off? If you don’t support it, is it because it’s an ethical issue for you or because it’s not “worth it”? Share your ideas!

  1. Who doesn’t want more followers? I suppose if you tell yourself it’s just for a year… you know, like anything else you tell yourself, “just one bite” or “just one drink” or “just one more time” you know you’re lying, and you know that whatever you’re about to do, probably isn’t good for you. Honestly, the possibility of buying followers hadn’t crossed my mind. To me, it’s like cheating. Look at Lance now.;-(

  2. Oh my, I would have never even thought this was an option. I don’t think I would support a business that “bought” followers. It’s just not right and if they’re willing to lie and cheat to do that what else would they be willing to do for their business? The point of followers is to eventually have them become customers/clients and if I were the client I would discontinue my business with someone who is dishonest and not willing to work hard.

  3. The problem with buying likes and followers is that you aren’t buying followers in your target market. The only advantage of having paid followers is the impression people get when they see you have 10,000 followers, impressive? Maybe.
